Case study: Eat Smart Organics

Eat Smart Organics (PTY) Ltd is the first certified organic food factory to prepare and package ‘heat and eat' nutritionally balanced organic meals for the hospitality industry, retail sector, convenience stores and corporate markets.

The company's fully Ecocert-accredited organic food factory is situated in Montague Gardens, Cape Town. It is a wholly women-owned and managed business. Each shareholder brings her own special brand of skill and expertise to the business, combining to make a formidable team.

The company was established in 2006 and entered the retail market in November last year, however, the research and business planning commenced in 2005. "Our dream is to leave an indelible footprint and make a meaningful contribution to society through the establishment of a world class and successful business," says Juliette du Preez, chief executive officer.

The company is headed by chief executive officer Juliette du Preez, director: product innovation and development Rene Hector and production director Bronwyn Hugo. Says Juliette: "We are all born and bred Capetonians and are passionate about our Western Cape roots. We were all schooled in and around the Cape Town area."

All Eat Smart Organics meals are free of chemicals, colourants, artificial fertilisers, pesticides, preservatives, tartrazine, MSG and hydrogenated fats. Thus, Eat Smart Organics products are designed with conscious consumers in mind. Business Partners played a crucial role by assisting with the purchasing of the building.

As the Organic kitchen concept required being "custom made", it was critical for the future sustainability of our business that we "own" our business premises. The genuine interest that the Business Partners team showed and the visits to our premises in order to understand the business, was excellent. Even the board members visited our organic kitchen and shared our enthusiasm.
